Get your $#!~ together BEFORE the recording process begins! This makes way for creativity to take place! For example - you got a song that you LOVE, but your drummer thinks its lame and sounds too repetetive. Get a third opinion! And better yet, an UNBIASED opinion with someone you DON'T share a jamspace with, you DON'T do drugs with, you DON'T steal kids' lunch money with, etc. Preproduction can prepare you for the recording process so you go into it confident, relaxed and ready to make a gold record. Here we work out AHEAD OF TIME things like tempo of songs, arrangement of melodies, etc. We can even do a dry run of the recording to see what direction the sound is going in - all before the REAL recording begins.
The Damage Productions recording environment is VERY fun, relaxed and easy-going. This can be confirmed with ANYONE on my past client list. Lots of folk stress about the recording process, particularly if they are unprepared. It's VERY important to NOT lose sight of why we're all doing this in the first place - because its FUN! And the way we do that is by saying positive and encouraging things like "that was perfect! do it again" or, "dude I don't really care if you keep screwing up, it's your money" or, "try it again, it's like the 75th time we've done this, eventually you'll get it right just based on probability" or, "dude, just give me the guitar and let me do this, you're making a fool of yourself" or, "don't worry i can fix it with autotune, i really don't think it'll get much better anyways." Recording should be a fun and painless process. If it isn't, it will always reflect in the end result!
"A producer is the guy that tells the artist what to do and later makes all the changes, and then, when the cartoon's done, he takes all the credit!
—Stimpy, Ren and Stimpy
No truer words have been said. Well not entirely, because I actually won't take ALL the credit!! Plus we're not doing cartoons. During the Preproduction / Recording / Mixing processes, a producer has the ability to inject alot of his or her creative influence. I am no exception. I will never let something that I believe is mediocre to even pass through a microphone if I don't believe in it 100%. Well thats not true either, because usually its done passing through the microphone before I decide that it was less-than-great. On the other side of the coin, if I think of something that I believe will bring life to the production I will encourage the artist to do it. I work PERSONALLY with every artist in every aspect of the production from song-writing right down to performance, until we mutually decide that everything we are doing is GREAT. 9 times out of 10 what WE come up with together is far better than what the artist had originally envisioned. The remaining 1 out of 10 though... eh
One of the things that Damage Productions is known best for is its memorable and unique mixes. Any project that has been already recorded from any medium (yes, even your old analog 1", 2", 8, 16 or 24 track tapes) will get the sound they've yearned for despite WHERE and WHEN you recorded them. Regardless of DAW, from 1984 to 1994 to 2004, all tracks get their due attention. Guitars get widened, bass gets fattened. Vocals get spruced up, keyboards get more vibrant and SOMETIMES - new tracks tend to appear! At this point of the production phase we really focus on the vibe of the artist and do our very best to bring that vibe to life. The great thing about Damage Productions mixes - they are guaranteed! No mix that you are not 100% happy with will be called complete.
It is completely possible to save projects from the dregs of LOUSY MIX JOBS. It is ENORMOUSLY frustrating to have a project that you poured EVERYTHING into come out sounding like it was recorded in a trash can. This is where Damage Productions comes in. Tracks will be cleaned, remixed, rearranged, even added to if necessary. Whatever it takes to make mixes that are sub-par, sub-cool, sub-clean, or downright awful sound like they actually DID have a ton of work put into them.... because they probably did!
Damage Productions' Mastering Facility came about as a result of too many projects being RUINED in the mastering phase by others less-than-qualified. This often happens with artists that seek to cut corners for budgeting purposes. If you have an 80% mix it can be brought to 110% by enhancing its best qualities. Remember: NO ONE can save a horrible mix with mastering. Mastering can be alot like make-up: you can only enhance what's already there. If you don't have a good foundation to work with, your screwed from the start.
Damage Productions is fully mobile. That means that we can find a way to produce in just about ANY sound-friendly environment. Be aware: there are limitations. Room treatment, available space, time requirements, neighbor annoyance, all this must be taken into consideration. If you have the right kind of room and right kind of conditions, we can do the right kind of production. If not, this service is not available to you and we must seek alternate methods.
The best part: it can be done on-site! Have a guitar emergency? This goes for ANY KIND, acoustic or electric, 6 or 7 or 8 string, bass or not bass, Damage Productions can provide setups, intonation, pickup installation or uninstallation, wiring, electronics, polishing, cleaning, pruning, trimming, de-lousing, sterilizing, even disposal! This goes for EVERY bridge system you can think of too! Trem or no trem, Floyd Rose, Kahler, Fixed, Stop-tail, String-thru, you name it.
